A remote reef break on Madeira's rugged northwest coast, Achadas da Cruz delivers long, quality waves to a near-empty lineup thanks to one of the more unusual access situations in European surfing. Reaching the beach requires a cable car descent from the clifftop village, which filters out most of the crowd by default. SW and NW swells in the 3-8ft range are the sweet spot, with offshore winds from the NE. The wave suits intermediate to advanced surfers who can read a reef and handle unpredictable Atlantic pulses. Bottom: reef. Season: Oct-Mar. Consistency: moderate but rewarding when on. Bring everything you need from town, because there is nothing at the bottom except ocean, rock, and empty waves.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The cable car acts as a natural crowd filter. Weekdays and weekends both read as empty in available reports. There is no evidence of heavy local pressure, but respect the effort and remoteness by keeping the tone low-key. Those who make the trip earn the peace.

Access & Facilities

Located between Porto Moniz and Ponta do Pargo on the northwest coast. Access is via a teleférico (cable car) from the clifftop. Carry water, wax, and any supplies before descending. There are no reported facilities at beach level. Reef hazard is real: booties worth considering, especially at lower tides.

Nearby Alternatives

Porto Moniz to the east offers additional reef options and has more infrastructure. Ponta do Pargo to the southwest picks up similar NW swells and is worth checking if the cable car is out of service.
