A right-hand point on Madeira's northwest coast that once delivered long, powerful Atlantic walls before a 2003 breakwater fundamentally altered the break. Positioned near São Vicente, it now requires genuinely large NW swell to fire properly, with low tide being the only window where the wave holds its shape with any consistency. NE winds groom the face. At size, the paddle-out demands a well-timed rock jump, and getting back in is a genuine lottery when surge is sweeping the entry point. Tales of surfers caught in the lineup as swells built and light faded are not folklore. Best suited to experienced surfers who read ocean energy well, ideally on guns. Bottom: Rock. Season: Autumn and winter. Consistency: Low to moderate post-breakwater. Do not attempt the rock entry in building swell without a clear exit plan already in mind.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays see few surfers, weekends bring moderate crowds with a small, protective local crew. The vibe is broadly welcoming but the wave's post-breakwater inconsistency keeps numbers in check. There have been pointed local messages about outside surfers publicising the break. Read the room.

Access & Facilities

São Vicente is the reference town. The wave sits adjacent to a camping field and a restaurant provides informal parking, though space is very limited. Rock entry and exit are the main hazard: assess the surge before committing, and have a plan before paddling out. Water quality is generally clean with occasional issues.

Nearby Alternatives

When Faja da Areia is too small or the rock entry is too sketchy, the beachbreaks closer to São Vicente offer a more manageable option. Ribeira da Janela and Paul do Mar on the southwest coast are worth checking for similar NW swell windows with different access profiles.
