A seawall construction has dramatically altered what was once a long freight-train pointbreak on Madeira's north coast, but Ponta Delgada still delivers on the right day. The outside section survives and fires on W to NE swells in the 8ft-plus range, with SW offshores grooming the faces. Low to mid tide is the window, too much water and the boulders below lose their punch. This is expert-only territory: the reef is uneven with boulders throughout the lineup, and the swell sizes required to get it going demand solid big-wave experience. Bottom: point over boulders. Season: autumn through winter. Consistency: low. Go in knowing the seawall has taken the best of what this wave once offered, so temper expectations and treat any session here as a bonus rather than a sure thing.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The lineup is rarely crowded, partly due to inconsistency and partly because the expert-level conditions filter most surfers out. On the days it does fire at size, expect those in the water to know what they are doing and to be territorial about it. Give respect, wait your turn, and read the situation before paddling straight to the peak.

Access & Facilities

Free parking is available at Ponta Delgada on Madeira's north coast. Restrooms are on site. The boulder reef is the main hazard, a hold-down over uneven rocks at this size is serious business. Wear a helmet and impact vest on bigger days.

Nearby Alternatives

If the swell isn't hitting the right angle for Ponta Delgada, Paul do Mar on the southwest coast picks up W and NW groundswell more consistently and offers a different boulder-over-reef experience. Jardim do Mar, further southwest, is the island's benchmark big-wave pointbreak and worth checking if significant swell is running.
