A punchy right-hand reef break sitting half a mile down the beach from the more famous Zippers, The Rock earns its name from the boulder-strewn lineup that makes every session a dodging exercise. S and SW swells in the 4-8ft range are the sweet spot, paired with W-NW winds and a mid-to-high tide to cover the shallower sections. The takeoff zone is compact, sitting right next to the namesake rock, so the peak fills fast and patience runs thin. Bottom: rock and reef. Season: April through October. Consistency: moderate, best on strong S swells. At low tide, boils and exposed sections will test your board-reading ability and your quiver, so time your sessions carefully and bring a board you don't mind dinging. Intermediate to advanced surfers only. The shallow, sharp reef is unforgiving, and this is not a break to learn on.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays stay manageable, but weekends bring the Zippers overflow and the compact takeoff zone gets tight fast. Localism exists, competitive but not extreme. Respect the pecking order, don't snake, and the vibe stays civil. The limited peak means one person snaking a set can sour an entire session for everyone around them.

Access & Facilities

Park at Zippers or near the Cabo Surf Hotel and walk the beach. The cliff above the break makes it easy to scout conditions before paddling out. Hazards are the main story here: shallow, sharp reef at every stage of the tide, with exposed rocks that have drawn blood from distracted surfers. Booties are worth considering. Water quality is clean.

Nearby Alternatives

When The Rock is maxing out or too crowded, Zippers just up the beach offers more consistent, longer rides with a bigger takeoff zone. If swell is small and the reef breaks are too sluggish, check the beach peaks between the two spots for softer, more forgiving options.
