A long left-hand pointbreak on the Baja California Sur coast, Punta Conejo delivers rides of 150-500m on a strong S or SW swell, making it one of the region's most coveted setups when it fires. Optimal conditions require SW-W winds or dead calm, as the prevailing N-NE tradewinds blow sideshore and quickly kill the wave. Low to mid tide is the sweet spot, with the wave working from around 3ft and holding well past 8ft on bigger swells. Intermediate surfers will manage comfortably, but the long wall rewards those who can generate speed and link sections. The drive in is roughly an hour on dirt road. Bottom: rock and sand. Season: summer S swell window, June through October. Consistency: medium to low, genuinely fickle. Camp on the bluff above the sand wash, not on the flat below: flash floods off the mountains have washed vehicles into the sea.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekends can draw a moderate crew, especially as surf camps in the area have multiplied. On most days the lineup is light to empty. Vibes are generally relaxed camping-crew energy: respect the spot, pack your trash out, and don't cut new roads to the bluff. The wave itself is what matters here, not the hierarchy.

Access & Facilities

The turnoff is signed from the highway. Expect roughly an hour on a rough dirt road. Park on the bluff. No shops, no water, no facilities beyond what you bring. Haul in enough water, food, and fuel for at least two to three days. Block ice lasts longer than cubed. Local fishermen near the lighthouse sometimes sell fresh catch directly. Strong afternoon winds make secure tarp setup essential.

Nearby Alternatives

When Punta Conejo is flat or blown out, La Ventosa east of Salina Cruz offers a far more consistent beachbreak that handles small to medium swell well. Punta Chipehua is a remote quality right over rocks and sand that needs a solid S swell, while Concepción Bamba provides better wind protection when the tradewinds are hammering the exposed points.
