Heavy, thick-lipped barrels detonate over a beach break on the Pacific coast of Baja California Sur, making Supertubes one of the more serious beach break setups in the region. It needs SW to NW swell from 6-8ft before it starts showing its teeth, and holds up past 12ft on the right push. Offshore winds out of the E to SE are ideal. Low tide is the only real option here, the wave becomes a ledging slab that throws hard, demanding a fast bottom turn to link the first tube section into the next one before the end section closes out. This is an advanced wave. The lineup stays relatively uncrowded through the week and even weekends see few surfers, partly because the entry bar is high and the wave punishes hesitation. Bottom: beach over rocky substrate. Season: September through April. Consistency: moderate, swell-dependent. Pick your peaks with patience, the wrong one closes out fast and the inside is unforgiving.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Supertubes draws very few surfers even on weekends. The demanding entry conditions and raw wave character keep most people out. No reported heavy localism, but standard respect applies, experienced lineup, so read the pecking order and earn your sets.

Access & Facilities

Access is straightforward from the main coastal road. Facilities are minimal in the immediate area, so bring water and wax. The rocky bottom visible at low tide is the primary hazard, wipeouts are real consequences here. Check conditions before paddling out.

Nearby Alternatives

When Supertubes is too big or the swell is too small, nearby beach peaks along the Baja Pacific coast offer more forgiving options in the same swell window. A short drive will turn up alternatives that work at smaller sizes if you need something more manageable.
