One of the most celebrated right-hand point breaks on the planet, Supertubes sits on a flat slate reef at Jeffreys Bay on South Africa's Eastern Cape, not Baja California Sur. SW to NW swells, ideally 4-8ft, firing down a sand-over-slate point for 400m or more on a solid day, with E winds going offshore and keeping faces clean. It suits expert surfers almost exclusively: the wall accelerates faster than expected, tubes need to be ridden high in the pocket, and even a modest 6ft swell draws a competitive, experienced crowd. On bigger days, sets break wide and the wave can link through multiple sections toward the town beach. Bottom: submerged reef over slate. Season: June to August. Consistency: high year-round, peaking in austral winter. Bring a board you can generate speed on, because this wave will outrun you if you hesitate.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

This is one of the most photographed lineups in surfing, and the crowd reflects that. When it is on, expect a pack of experienced chargers. The Billabong Pro runs here in July, compressing tourist traffic and surf media into the same window. Dawn patrol gives the best shot at breathing room, but patience and respect in the lineup are non-negotiable.

Access & Facilities

Parking is available near the break. There are no facilities at the break itself, so bring water and sun protection. The reef is knee-deep on good days, so falls have consequences. Flat slate underfoot means less sharp than coral but still unforgiving at speed.

Nearby Alternatives

When Supertubes is too big or overcrowded, Boneyards at the top of the point is heavier and faster but thins the pack. The Point at the far end of the bay offers a fatter, slower wall better suited to less committed days. Albatross, further down on sand-over-reef, wakes up on bigger swells and rarely gets the same attention.
