A deepwater canyon just offshore funnels long-interval W and SW swells into steep, spinning lefts that reel along the headland into a small rocky bay at the southern tip of Baja. SSW, SW, and W swells are the bread and butter, with that submarine canyon amplifying long-period energy so Monuments can be double-overhead while nearby Costa Azul sits barely head-high on the same swell. NE wind is ideal, afternoon W winds regularly blow it out, so dawn patrol pays. Mid to high tide keeps the shallow rock-and-urchin bottom honest. Best from April through October. Consistent enough for intermediate surfers but the tight takeoff, powerful sets, and hazardous inside section demand focus. Crowds are moderate given proximity to Cabo San Lucas, but weekdays you may have it nearly to yourself. Bottom: shallow rocks and urchins. Season: April-October. Consistency: regional classic. Bring a step-up if the swell is running solid double-overhead, and under no circumstances put your feet down on the inside.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Closest surf spot to downtown Cabo means weekends draw a moderate crowd. Weekday mornings can be relatively quiet. Locals are generally approachable but can get intense when it's firing. Respect the lineup, don't snake, and the vibe stays manageable. Nothing like the heavier crew at some other Cabo-area breaks.

Access & Facilities

Drive east from Cabo San Lucas toward San Jose del Cabo. Access runs through a guarded hotel gate, security typically allows surfers through. Park above the break and take the dirt trail down. After a session, the hotel above the break serves cold beers with a direct view of the arch. Water quality is clean.

Nearby Alternatives

When Monuments is too small or blown out, Costa Azul a short drive toward San Jose del Cabo catches more swell exposure and offers a different bottom configuration. On smaller days, the beach breaks closer to Cabo town can fill the gap for less committed sessions.
