A shifty sandbar and point break at the mouth of Laguna la Bocana, roughly 11 miles northwest of Punta Abreojos on Baja Sur's remote Pacific coast, this spot rewards intermediates willing to make the drive. Rights peel off the shifting sandbars with a left-hand point option thrown in, so the session depends on which bar is stacking sand that week. SSW swell is the engine here, with NE offshores grooming the faces cleanly. Works best in summer through autumn, peaking around August when Southern Hemisphere swells push up the coast. Crowds are rarely an issue this far from the gringo trail. Bottom: sand. Season: June to October. Consistency: moderate, swell-dependent. Sandbars shift constantly, so scout from the beach before paddling out and watch for strong rip currents running through the lagoon mouth, the same geography that shapes the waves also funnels water out hard. Sharks are present in these waters year-round.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

This stretch of Baja Sur is genuinely remote. Crowds are rare, and the lineup vibe is relaxed when people do show up. Treat the small local community with respect, buy supplies locally if you can, and do not leave trash at the beach. The access road keeps casual day-trippers away.

Access & Facilities

A rough dirt road off the main Baja highway is the only way in. Four-wheel drive or high clearance is strongly recommended, especially after rain. No formal facilities at the break. Bring all your own water, food, and fuel. Punta Abreojos, about 11 miles southeast, has basics. Camp responsibly.

Nearby Alternatives

Punta Abreojos offers a more defined right-hand point setup when La Bocana's bars are not cooperating. Further north, spots around Bahia Asuncion pick up similar SSW swell and provide consistent options if the lagoon mouth is too rip-heavy.
