A-frame beachbreak peaks at the northwest corner of Playa Espadilla, Playitas sits tucked into a rocky cove just north of Manuel Antonio National Park and consistently punches above its tourist-town surroundings. SW to W swells in the 3-8ft range are the sweet spot, with a NE offshore keeping faces clean. Mid to high tide is non-negotiable here: submerged rocks that sit dry at low tide become serious hazards once the water rises, so scout the lineup at low tide before paddling out. The crowd is lighter than the main Espadilla stretch, especially at dawn, when you can often share the peak with just a handful of locals. Bottom: mixed sand and rock. Season: May through November. Consistency: medium. Come at first light with a fish or a mid-length and you will get the best of what this wave offers before the park day-trippers arrive and the onshore picks up.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekend crowds are generally light by Costa Rican standards. Locals are easygoing, but the Manuel Antonio tourist orbit brings in inexperienced surfers who can clutter the lineup. Dawn patrol solves most of that. Standard respect applies: read the peak, take turns, and check your surroundings before paddling for a set.

Access & Facilities

Most surfers park at Manuel Antonio and walk roughly 100m north past the large rock to the cove. An alternative dirt road descends from the Hotel Mariposa direction and allows beach parking. Surf shops and ding repair are available nearby. Be aware of petty theft in parked vehicles, a known issue in the area.

Nearby Alternatives

When Playitas is too small or too crowded, Playa Espadilla Sur near the former Mar y Sombra restaurant location is worth checking for a different angle. For more serious waves, Dominical to the south is 40km down the coast and picks up more swell with a heavier, faster beach break.
