Jaco's main beachbreak is the workhorse of Costa Rica's busiest surf town, not its showpiece. Playa Jaco picks up SW, SSW, and S swells reliably through the dry and wet season crossover, with E winds keeping faces clean. Works best waist- to head-high at mid to high tide, when peaks hold their shape longest on the sandbars. All skill levels can find something here, though the lineup is reliably crowded given Jaco's status as the country's de facto surf capital. Bottom: sand. Season: March to August. Consistency: high during swell season, average quality. Water quality is fair at best given proximity to town, and sea lice are a recurring issue, so a rash guard is worth throwing in the bag. Rip currents run strong between sandbars, particularly on bigger days, so read the beach before paddling out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Jaco is the hub of Costa Rican surfing and the crowds reflect that. Tico locals are active and capable in the lineup. Localism is manageable but present, standard lineup etiquette goes a long way. Dawn patrol is the obvious move to get uncrowded peaks before the town wakes up.

Access & Facilities

The beach is a short walk from downtown Jaco, where board rentals, surf schools, gear shops, food, and accommodation are all close. Parking is available near the beach. Water quality is only fair due to urban runoff, so avoid surfing after heavy rain if possible.

Nearby Alternatives

When Jaco closes out or the crowd is unbearable, Playa Hermosa sits just a few km south and offers a more powerful, hollow beachbreak favored by intermediate to advanced surfers. Boca Barranca to the north is a long left point worth checking on a solid SW swell.
