Four miles of black sand beach producing some of the most consistent beachbreak in Costa Rica, Playa Hermosa sits about two hours south of San Jose on the Central Pacific coast. S and SW swells are the engine here, working best at head-high to a few feet overhead, with NE offshores grooming shifting A-frames up and down the beach. Mid-to-high tide is the sweet spot since low tide exposes a shallow bottom that can throttle you on heavier sets. Intermediate to expert surfers will find the most value, though the quality peaks near the main access draw real crowds. Bottom: Sand. Season: May through October. Consistency: High, one of the most reliable beachbreaks on the coast. Head south toward Tulin or beyond to trade foot traffic for open peaks.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The main peaks near the hotels and restaurants fill up fast, especially when it is firing. The vibe is generally welcoming but can get intense in the lineup on good days. Dawn patrol or paddling away from the access points is the practical move. Four miles of beach means uncrowded peaks genuinely exist if you are willing to walk.

Access & Facilities

Park at one of the restaurants, bars, or hotels lining the beach. Plenty of food and water options directly at the break. Water quality is clean despite proximity to populated areas. Watch the shallow bottom on low-tide sets. No shuttle or long walk required from the main access.

Nearby Alternatives

When the main stretch is maxed out or too crowded, heading south toward Tulin or continuing further to Esterillos opens up emptier peaks on the same swell. Both options reward surfers willing to drive an extra 20-30 minutes.
