A jetty wedge and rivermouth break near the port of Caldera, 3km south of Boca Barranca, Caldera Jetty throws up fast, steep lefts that can barrel on solid S-SSW groundswell. The rights exist but are a distant second choice. Easterly offshores are the wind to wait for, and mid to high tide tends to clean up the shape. Rides run 50 to 150m depending on swell size, topping out around 8ft on a strong SSW pulse. Intermediate surfers will feel at home here, and the spot stays genuinely quiet on weekdays, though bodyboarders pack the peak on weekends. Bottom: sand over a rivermouth bar. Season: April to October, south swell season. Consistency: moderate, swell-dependent. One honest caveat: the water quality is poor this close to the port and river outflow, so keep your mouth shut on wipeouts and skip it after heavy rain.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Midweek the lineup is relaxed and often nearly empty, making it a practical option for surfers passing through the Caldera corridor. Weekends shift the dynamic considerably, with bodyboarders arriving in numbers for the steep left. No heavy localism reported, but standard lineup respect applies.

Access & Facilities

Caldera is a working port town roughly 3km south of Boca Barranca on Costa Rica's central Pacific coast. Basic services are available in Puntarenas nearby. Water quality near the rivermouth and port is consistently poor. Strong lateral currents can develop along the bar, particularly on bigger swells, so know your exit before paddling out.

Nearby Alternatives

Boca Barranca, 3km north, is the better-known left point in this stretch and worth checking when Caldera is not cooperating. Playa Hermosa (Jacó area) to the south offers more consistent beach break options if the swell window aligns.
