One of the longest left-hand point breaks in Costa Rica, Boca Barranca peels off a rivermouth sand-over-flat-rock bottom just south of Puntarenas, roughly 90 minutes from San José. S and SSW swells at 3-10ft are the engine, with NE to ENE trade winds holding the face clean and low to mid tide producing the best shape. On a solid pulse, rides can stretch 700-800 yards through multiple linking sections, making this a genuine Costa Rican standout for intermediate surfers and up, though all abilities can find something on smaller days. Proximity to the capital means the lineup fills fast when it's firing. Bottom: flat rocks with sand over a rivermouth bar. Season: May through October. Consistency: medium. One honest warning: water quality here is genuinely poor, worse after rainfall, which is exactly when the swell tends to show up, so weigh that before your session.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Close to San José, this place draws a large and loyal local contingent including longboarders, contest crowds, and weekend warriors from the capital. Localism is present but manageable if you surf respectfully, wait your turn, and don't burn anyone. Dawn patrol mid-week is your best shot at a less competitive lineup.

Access & Facilities

Drive to the far end of the bridge on the Puntarenas side, pay the parking fee at the lot, and walk down to the rivermouth. No facilities on site. Bring water, snacks, sun protection, and a change of clothes. The forecast services advisory flags crocodiles, petty theft, and pollution as genuine hazards. Do not leave valuables visible in your vehicle.

Nearby Alternatives

If Boca Barranca is blown out or too crowded, Puerto Caldera offers a faster, more ripable left rivermouth bar just up the coast that works on bigger swells. Playa Hermosa to the south delivers powerful black-sand beachbreak with a more punishing, high-performance character when solid S swell is running.
