A sandbar break inside Point Reyes National Seashore, Drake's Bay rewards the effort of a long beach walk with uncrowded, shape-dependent peaks that can swing between mellow longboard runners and punchy, barreling walls. Optimal conditions call for SW to NW groundswell in the 3-8ft range, offshore winds that blow consistently along this stretch of coastline, and low to mid tide for the best sandbar expression. The walk-in filters out most crowds, so even on weekends you'll share the lineup with only a handful of surfers. Bottom: sand. Season: fall and winter. Consistency: moderate, sandbar-dependent. Check the bars before committing to the trek since a poor sandbar setup produces mediocre, shapeless waves regardless of swell. The national seashore setting means no facilities at the break itself, so carry water, food, and a leash lock. Shark activity has been reported in this region, so surf in groups when possible and avoid dawn and dusk sessions.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The distance required to reach the lineup acts as a natural filter. Weekdays are typically empty, weekends bring a few surfers at most. No notable localism reported, but the usual respect protocols apply in a small, self-selected lineup.

Access & Facilities

Access runs through Point Reyes National Seashore. Expect a long walk down the beach from the Point Reyes trailhead, followed by a longer-than-average paddle to the lineup. No facilities at the wave itself. Pack everything in and out. Water quality is generally clean inside the national seashore boundary.

Nearby Alternatives

If the bars at Drake's are blown out or shapeless, Bolinas and the outer breaks along the Marin coast can offer more consistent options depending on swell and wind. Ocean Beach in San Francisco is a viable backup when larger NW swell is running.
