Four miles of black sand beach producing the most consistent beachbreak in Costa Rica, Playa Hermosa sits about two hours from San José and catches virtually every swell direction except NW. S, SW, and SSW groundswells are the magic ticket, and the wave shows its real character on a solid south with NE offshores keeping faces clean. Mid-high tide is optimal, lower tide means heavier paddle battles and a real risk of getting caught inside on bigger sets. Open to almost any swell, shifting A-frames run both ways across the sand, which rewards surfers who can read peaks quickly and reposition. Crowd pressure is moderate given the proximity to the capital, but four miles of coastline means uncrowded peaks are findable if you're willing to walk. Bottom: sand. Season: March to October. Consistency: high. Head north toward the main access or drift south toward Tulin when the main peak fills in.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Being the closest consistent surf beach to San José, Playa Hermosa draws a real crowd on good days. Costa Rican surfers here are welcoming but competitive in the water, and jockeying happens when it's pumping. Humility and patience pay off. Heading south toward Tulin thins the lineup noticeably.

Access & Facilities

Straightforward two-hour drive from Juan Santamaría International Airport. The beach is easy to reach with no significant hike. Food, rentals, and lodging cluster near the main access. Water quality is surprisingly clean given the area's population density.

Nearby Alternatives

When Hermosa is maxed out or too packed, continue south toward Esterillos for a more open, less crowded stretch of sand. Tulin, midway down the beach, offers a middle ground between the crowds of the main peak and the exposed emptiness further south.
