Soft, scattered A-frame peaks define Manuel Antonio, a beach break on Costa Rica's Central Pacific coast about 45 minutes south of Jacó. SW and S swells are the ticket, ideally at mid tide with a NE trade wind keeping faces clean. The break starts showing at 3ft and can push overhead-plus on solid swell pulses during the May-October rainy season, though most days sit chest-high and forgiving. Beginners and intermediates will feel at home on the mellow, sand-bottomed peaks, and weekday sessions stay manageable, though weekends pull a tourist-heavy crowd. Bottom: sand with scattered rocks. Season: May to October. Consistency: moderate, swell-dependent. Rent a fish or a funboard from one of the nearby shops and avoid the low-tide dump sections by timing your session to the incoming mid-tide window. Quepos rivermouth sits just a few kilometers north and offers longer lefts on W or NW swell when Manuel Antonio goes flat or closes out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays are mellow, but weekends and holiday periods fill the beach fast with tourists and surf school students. Locals surf Playitas, a nearby stretch a short walk north with three distinct peaks that draws bodyboarders and more experienced local surfers. Respect that split. Drop in on nobody, keep noise low in the lineup, and the vibe stays welcoming.

Access & Facilities

Guarded parking is available at the National Park entrance. Board rentals, restaurants, and hotels line the road parallel to the beach. The national park itself is directly adjacent and worth a morning for wildlife before the surf fills in. Water quality is clean despite the surrounding development.

Nearby Alternatives

Quepos rivermouth, a short drive north, works better on W and NW swells and produces longer lefts for those looking for more wall. On bigger S swells, check the outer points between Jacó and Quepos for more powerful options.
