A left point tucked inside a horseshoe bay north of Jacó, Herradura's main draw is the left-hander wrapping off Isla Herradura at the bay's south end. It needs a solid SW swell, ideally 6-8ft, to properly fire, and an E-NE offshore wind to hold the face clean. The wave itself is long and relatively forgiving for its size, running over a mixed sand-and-reef bottom with gentle sections that suit intermediate surfers looking for open-faced walls rather than heavy barrels. Access is boat-only, which keeps the lineup near-empty on the days it does switch on. Bottom: mixed sand and reef. Season: May through mid-December, with July the peak month. Consistency: infrequent, only ignites on bigger SW pulses. Charter a panga from the main beach and bring a step-up board since this spot rarely rewards a fish or shortboard on smaller days.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Boat-only access and infrequent firing conditions mean the lineup is typically quiet when it does work. On the rare solid-swell days that do align, expect a small crew of clued-in locals and traveling surfers in the know. No significant localism reported, but standard respect protocols apply.

Access & Facilities

No direct beach or road access to the break. Hire a panga from Playa Herradura on the main bay. Jacó is roughly 10 minutes south and has full amenities: food, water, board rentals, and accommodation. The bay is a major marina hub, so boat traffic can be an issue in the channel.

Nearby Alternatives

When Herradura isn't firing, Jacó Beach to the south offers consistent beach break that works on smaller swells. Playa Escondida and the breaks around Playa Hermosa (south of Jacó) pick up more swell and are worth checking when SW energy is in the water.
