A legitimate novelty on Costa Rica's central Pacific coast, Boca Damas is a rivermouth break on Isla Damas, roughly a mile north of the Quepos rivermouth. It delivers long, sectioned lefts that can run to 150m and shorter, rippable rights over a sand bottom. W to NW swells are the key ingredient, and the wave tends to run bigger than nearby Quepos. Incoming tide is the sweet spot: the sandbar shapes up and the lefts get hollow in the better sections. Intermediates can work the walls comfortably when conditions cooperate, and the crowd is rarely a factor out here. Bottom: sand. Season: May to October (wet season). Consistency: moderate, swell-dependent. The access situation demands respect: crocodiles are present in the river channel, and boat transport from Quepos is the sensible option. Do not attempt to wade or paddle through the river mouth to reach the lineup.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Remote access keeps crowds thin. The boat requirement filters casual surfers, so you are unlikely to find a packed lineup. Localism pressure is low, but that does not mean disrespect is cost-free. Treat the few surfers you do find with courtesy.

Access & Facilities

Boat access from Quepos is strongly recommended. Crocodiles inhabit the river channel and currents are powerful. There are no beachside facilities at the break itself. Quepos town, a short boat ride away, has food, water, and surf shops. Carry what you need.

Nearby Alternatives

Quepos rivermouth sits about a mile south and offers a similar sand-bottom setup that is more accessible on smaller swells. Playa Biesanz and breaks near Manuel Antonio National Park are within range when Boca Damas is not cooperating.
