A fast, hollow beach break south of Jaco that punches well above its quiet reputation, Bejuco sits on Costa Rica's central Pacific coast between Esterillos and Quepos. It responds to SW and S swells, picking up size even when nearby spots go flat, and holds a wide range from waist-high through double-overhead-plus. NE offshores groom the face nicely. Mid to high tide produces the cleanest, longest walls, sometimes running 150 to 300m on good days. Experienced surfers will find the most reward here, especially on head-high-plus days when the rights hollow out into proper barrels. Weekday crowds are near zero, weekends see a handful of surfers at most. Bottom: beach. Season: SW swell season peaks May through October. Consistency: reliable when south and southwest energy is in the water. Bring a shortboard with a bit of volume in the nose for the paddle-heavy sessions.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekday mornings here can mean you and a friend, possibly the whole beach to yourselves. Weekends bring a few more faces but nothing resembling a competitive lineup. Localism is low. Dawn patrol rewards patience: the sun intensifies fast on this stretch of coast, so start early for comfort and quality.

Access & Facilities

Head south on the coastal highway from Jaco toward Quepos, pass Esterillos, and watch for signed dirt roads leading to the beach roughly 10 to 15 minutes past Esterillos. A bar and campground sit near the parking area. No formal surf infrastructure, so bring your own water and food. Security is low concern with a clear sightline to the car from the water.

Nearby Alternatives

Esterillos Oeste and Playa Hermosa (north of Jaco) cover similar swell windows and are worth checking if Bejuco is closing out or the tide is wrong. Quepos and the Manuel Antonio area to the south offer additional options when a more southerly swell angle favors the lower coast.
