Tramandaí delivers punchy, shifting beach break peaks along Rio Grande do Sul's flat coastal strip, about 110km northwest of Porto Alegre via BR-290. The break works on S to SW swells and comes alive with a W to NW offshore wind that can push some sections into legitimate hollow tubes. Any size from knee-high to overhead-plus gets ridden here, and it handles a surprisingly wide range of tides. Mid-skill surfers will enjoy the variety during the week, when the lineup thins out considerably, but weekends and school holidays turn the water into an ultra-crowded free-for-all. Bottom: sand. Season: year-round, with autumn and winter swells most consistent. Consistency: moderate. There is no reliable channel, so paddle-outs can be a grind in bigger surf, the pier offers an alternative entry but treat the structure with caution. If you are traveling specifically for quality waves, regulars recommend continuing north to Garopaba in Santa Catarina before committing to a surf trip here.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays the lineup can be genuinely quiet. Weekends are a different story: Tramandaí is Porto Alegre's nearest beach, and the car parks fill fast. No heavy localism reported, but ultra-crowded conditions mean patience and awareness are essential. Dawn patrol sessions or midweek visits are the obvious way to find space.

Access & Facilities

Drive the BR-290 from Porto Alegre, roughly 110km. The town has full tourist infrastructure: food, accommodation, board rentals, and water. Water quality can dip in summer near the town centre, check conditions before paddling in close to the main beach access points.

Nearby Alternatives

When Tramandaí is blown out or maxed, the neighbouring beach of Imbé sits directly to the north and picks up similar swell with slightly different bank formations. For a significant quality upgrade, Garopaba in Santa Catarina is the regional recommendation and worth the extra drive when a proper swell is running.
