A long, exposed beachbreak south of the Rio Grande jetties, Cassino delivers rideable peaks when small, clean swells arrive from the E to S without onshore winds accompanying them. It works best on E to S swells in the 1-4ft range, with NW offshore winds cleaning up the faces. All tides are viable, but the spot is notoriously fickle: the nearby Rio Grande estuary generates persistent currents and adds a degree of water pollution from the rivermouth and drainage creeks that feed the beach. This is primarily a beginner to intermediate wave, and crowds are occasional rather than constant. Bottom: sand. Season: autumn and spring offer the most consistent small swells without summer onshore winds. Consistency: medium. The pollution risk is real, avoid the water for 48 hours after heavy rain when rivermouth runoff spikes significantly.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Crowds are occasional, picking up on weekends and during the summer holiday season when Porto Alegre residents head to the southern coast. Localism is not reported as a significant issue. The wave's inconsistency naturally keeps the lineup manageable most of the time.

Access & Facilities

Cassino is the nearest beach town to Rio Grande city, roughly 24km south along a direct coastal road. Free parking is available. Lifeguards are on duty in season, which is a meaningful safety asset given the rip and current exposure. No equipment rental information is confirmed, bring your own gear.

Nearby Alternatives

When Cassino is blown out or too polluted, Praia dos Molhes, starting from the south jetty, offers a decent left wall with some protection from N winds. Further up the coast toward Torres, Praia da Cal and Prainha provide more consistent hollow peaks with rock-anchored sandbars worth the drive when conditions align.
