A long, exposed Atlantic beach in the far south of Brazil, Praia do Cassino sits near the mouth of the Lagoa dos Patos estuary in Rio Grande do Sul, delivering beach-break peaks along one of the longest uninterrupted stretches of coastline in the world. It needs a SE or S swell to wake up, working from under 1ft through solid 6ft plus, with offshore winds from the NW or W that are most reliable in autumn and winter. On weekdays the lineup is essentially empty, but local crowds show up at weekends and the spot is accessible only by car, with no paddle-out infrastructure. Bottom: sand. Season: consistent year-round with best quality in autumn and winter. Consistency: moderate. Bring a fish or funboard for smaller days, and step up when south swells push past 4ft, as sandbars shift constantly along this coast and catching them in good shape takes timing.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekday sessions are quiet to empty, which is the main draw. Weekends pull local Rio Grande and Pelotas surfers, particularly in warmer months. No notable localism reported, but the sheer remoteness keeps the lineup self-regulating most days.

Access & Facilities

A car is essential. The beach is extremely long and facilities are sparse away from the main access town of Cassino. Watch for strong rip currents common on exposed Atlantic beach breaks, and be aware the estuary mouth affects water quality near the south end of the beach.

Nearby Alternatives

When south swells flatten out, spots further north along the Rio Grande do Sul coastline pick up more NE energy. The wider region occasionally produces quality peaks at exposed breaks toward Torres when larger swells arrive from the S or SE.
