An exposed beach break on the Serra coast just north of Vitória, Praia Grande picks up east groundswell and delivers lefts and rights over a sandy bottom with more consistency than many beaches in the state. It works best on east swell in the 3-6ft range with west-southwest offshores cleaning up the faces. Mid tide tends to keep the banks from going too shallow or too fat. The crowd is rarely an issue here, making it a solid choice for intermediate surfers looking for uncrowded waves without the pressure of busier lineups further south. Strong rip currents run along the beach, particularly on bigger swells, so read the water before paddling out. Bottom: Sand. Season: April peaks consistency, autumn overall most reliable. Consistency: Moderate, summer often flat and slow. Bring a standard shortboard or a fish for smaller days and check the rips before you commit to a paddle-out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The lineup is rarely busy, which is one of this beach's main draws for travelling surfers. Local surfers from the Serra area do use the break, but pressure is low compared to spots closer to the Vitória metro. Dawn patrol is an easy call here if you want first pick of the banks.

Access & Facilities

Praia Grande sits on the Serra coastline north of Vitória, accessible by road. Basic infrastructure is present along the beach strip. Watch for rip currents along the full length of the beach, especially after prolonged east swell. Water quality can be affected by urban proximity, worth checking locally before surfing.

Nearby Alternatives

When east swell isn't showing or the banks are poor, other Espírito Santo beaches along the Serra and Aracruz coastlines can pick up similar swell. Vitória-area breaks to the south are worth checking if size is small and you need more protected options.
