A fast, hollow beach break near Garopaba on the Santa Catarina coast, Barrinha punches well above its remote reputation with shifting peaks that can fire when the sandbars align. It picks up S to SSW groundswell cleanly, and offshore winds from the NW and N keep faces clean. Works from under 1m up to 2m-plus, with the best sessions coming at mid to high tide when the hollow sections hold shape longest. The lineup stays empty on weekdays and sees only a handful of surfers on weekends, which makes it worth the detour from Florianópolis. Bottom: sand. Season: autumn through spring. Consistency: moderate, sandbar-dependent. Critical note: surfing is prohibited during the fishing season in June and July, so plan around those months entirely. Sandbars shift each season, so the wave you scored last trip may not exist on your return.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekday sessions are effectively empty. Weekend crowds are minimal compared to the more exposed breaks around Florianópolis. Localism is low, but respect the fishing community and the seasonal access ban in June and July. Do not paddle out during the fishing closure.

Access & Facilities

About 90km south of Florianópolis via BR-101, exit toward Garopaba then follow signs toward Praia da Barra. Beach facilities are poor, so bring water, food, and sunscreen. Parking is available but fills up in summer peak season. No surf schools or rental shops noted nearby.

Nearby Alternatives

Garopaba town has a few beach break options that activate on similar S swell when Barrinha's sandbars are off. Silveira, a few kilometres south, is worth checking on larger SW groundswell for longer walls.
