One of Ceara's most consistent and powerful beachbreaks, Icarai sits about 20km west of Fortaleza near the town of Caucaia, fully exposed to both N and E swells. It picks up swell from the NW through E window and can hold up to 8ft before maxing out. SW winds go offshore here, and the break works across all tides. On good days, short sucky barrels appear before sections close out, and the wave can wall for 150-300m on the right push. Beginners can paddle out on smaller days, but the punch of this wave and the competitive lineup mean intermediates and up will get the most from it. Bottom: sand. Season: year-round, with NE trade swells most reliable. Consistency: high. Arrive early on weekdays to avoid the crowds that pack in on weekends and during WQS contest periods.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

This is a WQS contest venue and it draws accordingly. Crowds are described as intense and constant, not just on weekends. Weekend pressure is ironically listed as "few surfers" in local data, suggesting contest periods and weekday afternoon sessions pack harder than weekend mornings. Dawn patrol on a weekday is your best window. No specific localism red flags, but a competitive lineup rewards experience and wave knowledge.

Access & Facilities

Take the road west from Fortaleza toward Icarai town, roughly 20km. There is a car park on site and lifeguard coverage. Check in at Casa Amarela Restaurant or Cata-Vento nearby. No pollution concerns and no major hazards flagged. Water temperature stays warm year-round, boardshorts territory.

Nearby Alternatives

North up the coast, Cumbuco is the region's premier kite and windsurf destination, but that exposure hints at wave potential on the right swell. Back toward Fortaleza, Titanzinho offers the city's most consistent reefbreak peaks. If the beachbreak is blown out or maxed, Boca do Poco further west can wall up into a long right point on northerly swell.
