A residential beachbreak north of Virginia Beach proper, North End trades the crowded town breaks for slightly smaller, quieter peaks on a long stretch of open coast. It needs low tide and a solid swell to fire properly: at high tide or in small surf, waves fat out over a deep-water trough before the shorebreak and lose most of their shape. SW offshores are the call. Swell window runs N through S, so nor'easters and hurricane groundswells both count. Beginners can find gentler moments here, but intermediate surfers will get more from it when size pushes above head-high. Bottom: sand. Season: late summer through fall for hurricane energy. Consistency: medium. Summer brings parking restrictions and a noticeably busier lineup, so early mornings or weekday sessions limit the friction.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekends get crowded. Locals are protective of the lineup, especially with unfamiliar faces. Show respect, read the pecking order, and don't hassle anyone for waves. A quiet early session mid-week is your best bet for uncrowded peaks and cleaner conditions.

Access & Facilities

No dedicated parking at the break itself. Street options fill fast on summer weekends. First Landing State Park sits adjacent and offers camping practically on the beach, making it a practical base for an extended stay. No major hazards or pollution concerns flagged.

Nearby Alternatives

When North End is too small or crowded, the Virginia Beach town breaks to the south pick up more swell and have better-developed facilities around the pier. Camp Pendleton south of the city offers a less cramped beachbreak stretch when the main zones are packed.
