A sand-bottom jetty peak that reliably conjures Virginia Beach's only consistent wave, 1st Street has been the circus center of East Coast surfing for over 30 years. SE and E swells wrap around the rock jetty at low to mid tide, producing a mushy right-peeler with occasional left sections, working from waist-high through overhead and beyond. SW to W winds keep it clean. The wave suits every level on paper, but the lineup is genuine anarchy in summer, with board collisions common enough to be a real hazard. Bottom: sand over jetty structure. Season: late summer tropical cyclones through fall and winter nor'easters. Consistency: reliable when anywhere else in town is flat. Bring a board you don't mind dinging, pick dawn patrol or dead winter if you want any semblance of space, and keep your head on a swivel at all times.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

This is one of the most crowded lineups on the East Coast. Summer is full anarchy: tourists, beginners, hotshots, and grumpy veterans all competing for the same short walls. Locals have a pecking order but it has largely broken down under volume. Winter thins the crowd significantly and delivers better swell. Heckling is a documented local tradition here. Come respectful, come humble, or come in winter.

Access & Facilities

Paid parking at meters and lots near the old Lighthouse Restaurant site at 1st Street, Virginia Beach. Walk-in beach access. Rentals, food, and amenities close by along the strip. Water quality is fair, with diesel smell from nearby boat traffic a recurring issue. Main hazards: other people's boards, crowded paddle-outs, and heavy foot traffic on the beach.

Nearby Alternatives

When 1st Street is maxed-out chaos, the breaks around 40th and 42nd streets offer similar sand-bottom setups with meaningfully thinner crowds. Spread north or south along the beach on bigger swell days when the jetty effect matters less.
