A jetty-influenced beachbreak on the southern edge of Virginia Beach, Camp Pendleton sits flanked by a Marine Corps training base and catches E, SE, and S swells with enough consistency to make it a genuine option during hurricane season. SW to W winds go offshore here, and low to mid tide is when the outside sandbars square up and occasionally throw a barrel. Best size runs chest-high to overhead, though the break can technically handle larger swells when the sandbanks cooperate. All skill levels can find something, and the crowd is usually manageable given the wide stretch of sand, though the border with Croatan tightens things up. Bottom: Sand. Season: Late summer through fall for tropical swells, late fall and winter for nor'easters. Consistency: Medium. One honest caveat: access is restricted, and the adjacent Marine amphibious training activity is a real hazard worth taking seriously before paddling out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The vibe is welcoming and localism is minimal. The wide beachbreak spreads crowds out effectively during normal conditions, but bigger hurricane swells concentrate surfers near the Croatan boundary. Dawn patrol during storm swell windows is worth it if the sandbars are stacked.

Access & Facilities

Access is restricted due to the adjacent military base. There is a carpark but no facilities on site. Confirm access status before making the trip. The primary hazard is not the waves but military amphibious vehicles operating in the area.

Nearby Alternatives

If Pendleton is closed or flat, Croatan to the north offers a consistent jetty-boosted left and is one of Virginia Beach's most reliable options. Sandbridge to the south handles similar swell windows with a more open-ocean exposure and tends to be quieter on weekdays.
