A punchy New England beach break with three distinct setups, Scarborough State Beach sits on Rhode Island's south coast and rewards surfers who read conditions carefully. West swells with light offshore winds activate the car park right, while the middle peak runs more consistently across tides. The standout section is a reforming right on the reserve side, where swell wraps around an outside point and stacks on a sandbar beside a rip channel that keeps the sand sculpted. Works from under 1ft of surf up to 6ft plus on bigger NE or S hurricane swells, with the sweet spot sitting around 2-4ft. Crowds are light both midweek and weekends, making this accessible for intermediate surfers looking for uncrowded peaks, though the wave has enough punch to reward experienced shortboarders on better days. Bottom: sand. Season: fall peak, winter and spring active. Consistency: moderate to good. Arrive at dawn on a clean W swell after a storm front passes to catch the car park section before onshore flow kicks in.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Crowds are consistently light, even on weekends, which makes this a genuine find on the Rhode Island coast. The lineup is relaxed. On better swells, more experienced locals will show up at the car park peak, so read the room and be respectful in the takeoff zone.

Access & Facilities

Parking at the state beach lot is straightforward. The reserve side requires a short walk. Facilities include restrooms and seasonal lifeguards. Water quality is generally acceptable but check local advisories after heavy rain. Watch the rip channel on the reserve side as it can pull strongly on bigger swells.

Nearby Alternatives

Point Judith to the west picks up more exposed swell and can offer shelter from N winds. Matunuck is a short drive and handles similar swell windows, worth checking when Scarborough is maxed out or the wind goes onshore.
