Three cobblestone reef breaks packed into one compact stretch of Rhode Island coastline make Matunuck one of the most productive surf zones in New England. From east to west: Deep Hole delivers a speedy left at lower tides. Trestles offers an A-frame peak with hollow rights and zippy lefts. The Point produces a short, bowly right and a long, rippable left that links into an inside bowl on an incoming tide. SE and SSE swells are the sweet spot, S swells still work, and N winds groom all three peaks. Best from 3 to 8ft, though The Point and Trestles can hold well-overhead juice on a solid hurricane swell. Crowds peak hard on weekends, localism is real, and this is not the place to learn on rocks. Bottom: cobblestone boulders. Season: September through December. Consistency: solid fall window, occasional summer hurricane pulses. Bring a 4/3 at minimum and never, ever drop in.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekends bring heavy crowds across all three breaks, with the middle peak taking the most traffic due to beach access. Locals rip and they know it. Standard lineup etiquette is enforced without patience. Wait your turn, do not hesitate on set waves, and you will be treated fairly. Respect is earned here, not assumed.

Access & Facilities

Free year-round parking lot at the beach. The three peaks span roughly from the fishing lot east to a bar to the west. Cold Rhode Island water demands a 4/3 wetsuit from October through May, and hypothermia is a legitimate hazard in shoulder seasons. Rocks are exposed at lower tides.

Nearby Alternatives

When Matunuck is maxed out or the crowds are unbearable, Point Judith offers additional reef options nearby. Narragansett Town Beach catches similar swell exposures and is more forgiving on smaller days.
