An east-facing beachbreak on the northern edge of Newport, First Beach picks up NE and SE swell while largely missing the S groundswell that feeds the better spots in town. Best conditions arrive with a chest-high SE or SSE pulse, N wind holding the face, and any tide that isn't hammering straight onshore. The wave closes out frequently at size, so once it pushes above head-high, the other Newport breaks become the smarter call. It suits beginners and intermediates well, with slow rollers that carry low intimidation and a generally welcoming local vibe. Crowd pressure builds hard through summer, easing noticeably from fall into winter when the best swells actually arrive. Bottom: sand. Season: September through March. Consistency: moderate, but often mushy or closing out. Bring a longboard or fish on smaller days to make the most of the slower, softer walls.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Summer brings heavy crowds, compounded by beach-goers and learners. The local vibe stays mellow and welcoming year-round. Winter sessions thin the lineup considerably, and that timing also aligns with the better-quality swells. Dawn patrol in the shoulder season is the path of least resistance.

Access & Facilities

Street and lot parking are available but carry fees in summer. The beach has lifeguards in season, restrooms, and is walking distance from Newport's amenities. Water quality runs clean overall. Watch for swimmer traffic during peak beach season.

Nearby Alternatives

When First Beach closes out at size, Second Beach and Third Beach in Middletown offer better-shaped sandbars and more swell exposure. Newport's reef and point options also come alive on the same swells that overwhelm First Beach.
