Arguably the biggest rideable wave in New Hampshire, Plaice Cove is a punishing beach break that rewards patience and experience in equal measure. An ESE to SE swell at 4-10ft, incoming tide, and a westerly wind is the target combo. The heaving right-hander dumps onto a shallow rock ledge with little margin for error, and the shorebreak fires in every direction even before you make it to the lineup. Intermediate to advanced surfers will find the challenge worthwhile on a clean day, beginners should look elsewhere. Bottom: sand over scattered rocks and rock ledge. Season: September through March. Consistency: regular but fickle, a genuine crapshoot even in prime swell windows. Dawn patrol is your best bet in winter when the small lot fills early and the salty local contingent shows up with the swell.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Crowds are moderate but the vibe can tilt intense on the better days in autumn and winter. A core group of locals knows this wave well and expects others to earn their place in the lineup. Respect priority, paddle wide of the peak during lulls, and keep a low profile in the water.

Access & Facilities

Small parking lot sits right along the beach and fills fast when swell is up. Everything surrounding it is residential, so street parking is not a realistic option. Five-minute walk to the water at most. Full winter kit is essential from October through April, think 5/4 with booties, gloves, and a hood when air temps drop below freezing. Water quality is generally clean.

Nearby Alternatives

Fox Hill, just up the coast, offers more consistent and arguably higher-quality surf when Plaice Cove is being uncooperative. If the whole stretch is unsurfable, Hampton Beach to the south is worth a check for smaller, friendlier peaks.
