A peaky, mellow beachbreak on New Hampshire's short stretch of coastline, Jenness Beach rewards patient surfers willing to gear up for cold North Atlantic water. NE and SE swells both light it up, with E swells and an incoming mid-tide producing the cleanest peaks. W and NW offshores groom the faces nicely. It suits beginners through intermediates and carries a manageable crowd, though longboarders dominate the lineup and one good log-rider effectively commands a lot of real estate. Bottom: sand with random rocks. Season: September through March. Consistency: medium. The spot handles a wide size range from knee-high to a few feet overhead, but the rocks scattered across the sand bottom become a concern when the swell pushes toward the larger end of that window, so check the tide before paddling out. Metered parking and a lifeguard presence in summer make this an accessible entry point for the region.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The lineup can get moderately busy, especially on summer weekends when the designated surf zone fills quickly. Longboarders dominate and can unintentionally monopolize sets, so paddle for the open peaks rather than battling the log brigade in the main takeoff zone. Localism is low-key but respect the vibe, keep the party waves to a minimum, and yield to surfers deeper in the lineup.

Access & Facilities

Metered parking lot sits directly at the beach, it fills fast on warm summer weekends so arrive early. Lifeguard coverage through the summer season. Water is clean with consistently strong quality test results. Cold-water gear is non-negotiable from fall through spring: a 5/4 wetsuit with booties and gloves is the minimum in winter. Hypothermia risk is real if you underdress.

Nearby Alternatives

Hampton Beach to the south is New Hampshire's most consistent spot and handles larger swells better, with beachbreak peaks working on all tides. The north end of Hampton Beach also offers some shelter from NE winds when Jenness is getting chopped up.
