Fun, forgiving beachbreak peaks stretch along Wells Beach from Mile Road north to the Harbor Jetty, facing slightly more south than neighboring Ogunquit and picking up S swells that nearby spots miss. SE swell is the sweet spot, with NE-to-SE swell window covering most of the tidal range. WNW wind keeps it clean, incoming tide adds push, and head-high to a couple feet overhead is the ideal size. Beginners and intermediates can find mellow peaks with short rides most days, while a proper hurricane swell can produce hollow, punchy surf that rewards shortboarders. The jetty's south side holds a consistent sandbar locals know well, but walking south along the beach often yields uncrowded peaks. Bottom: Sand. Season: September through March. Consistency: Medium. Cold-water reality check: winter sessions here mean full 5/4 plus booties, gloves, and a hood, not an afterthought.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Summer brings tourist crowds and the lineup gets busy on weekends. September onward the crowds thin considerably, and by winter it's a committed local crew willing to suit up in serious cold-water gear. The vibe is welcoming across the board. Dawn patrol in shoulder season is the move for space and better conditions.

Access & Facilities

Pay parking beside the harbor jetty is the main entry point. Lifeguards are on duty in season. The town of Wells has food options nearby. Liquid Dreams surf shop is the local resource for gear and reports. Freezing water temps November through April demand a 5/4 wetsuit minimum with hood, gloves, and booties.

Nearby Alternatives

If Wells is small or onshore, Moody Beach to the north picks up more swell and can produce better-shaped peaks on a solid NE or SE, though it needs more size to turn on. Ogunquit's rivermouth right to the south is the focal point of Maine's surf scene and worth checking when a real swell is running.
