A rivermouth sandspit at the edge of Saco Bay occasionally produces one of Maine's longest beachbreak walls, but you'll need specific stars to align before it delivers. The western side of the Scarborough River outlet can throw up an extended left-hander on a SE swell of 4-6ft, low tide, with northerly winds keeping it clean. The rest of the beach runs average peaks across all tides, more consistent but less exciting. Intermediate surfers get the most from this setup, and the medium-to-low consistency means crowds are rarely an issue. Bottom: sand. Season: fall through early winter. Consistency: medium-low. Pack patience alongside your board bag, this wave rewards the surfer who checks it across multiple tides during a solid SE groundswell rather than the one-shot visitor.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Solo sessions are common here, a direct result of low consistency and the work required to catch it firing. Maine's surfing scene is small, locals are generally laid-back, and this is not a spot that draws destination crowds. Show up respectful and you'll be fine.

Access & Facilities

Parking is free and roadside in winter, a pay car park operates in summer. Restrooms are available on-site. The beach sits near Scarborough and is accessible via standard roads. Water quality is reported without concerns. The rivermouth area can have current during outgoing tide, worth watching on bigger swells.

Nearby Alternatives

When Pine Point is flat or blown out, the beachbreaks to the north offer similar all-tides setups and typically more consistent swell. Higgins Beach to the south is well protected from north winds and can offer cleaner conditions in the right swell window. The York-area breaks, including Short Sands and Long Sands, are worth the drive south when a solid NE swell is running.
