A southeast-facing beachbreak in Scarborough, Maine, Higgins Beach earns respect for its ability to hold legitimate overhead-plus groundswells that most East Coast sandbars would buckle under. The sweet spot is an E to SE swell, ideally born in the Caribbean and tracking up the Atlantic slot, pairing with a NW offshore wind and a low-to-mid incoming tide. Size range runs from chest-high to double-overhead, with the break shutting down near high tide on both ends. Best suited to intermediate and above surfers who can read a shifty bottom and handle cold New England water. Bottom: sand with rock outcroppings. Season: September through March. Consistency: medium, with long flat spells between good swells. Surfing is blackballed daily from 10am to 5pm between mid-May and October 1, so dawn patrol is non-negotiable in summer and fall.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Summer crowds are heavy, driven by proximity to Portland and tourist traffic. The vibe is generally welcoming and locals are described as mellow, but disrespectful visiting surfers have created friction in the past. Winter thins the lineup significantly. Dawn patrol avoids the worst of the summer crowds and beats the surfing ban.

Access & Facilities

Parking at 41 Ocean Ave off Route 77 costs around $10-15 per day in summer, collected from 5:30am to 6pm. Street parking on Bayview Ave is limited in summer but free off-season from October onwards. No facilities on the beach. Rips are common, know your exit before paddling out. Residential runoff occasionally affects water quality. Full winter rubber required from late fall through early spring.

Nearby Alternatives

Scarborough Beach State Park, a short drive south, offers similar sandbottom peaks with slightly different angle exposure. Old Orchard Beach to the south and the Scarborough rivermouth sandspit to the north are worth checking when Higgins is maxed out or the tide is wrong.
