Steep, fast, and occasionally hollow, Gooch's Beach in Kennebunk, Maine punches above its weight for a New England beach break. SE swell is the key ingredient, and during nor'easters the beach's orientation makes it one of the few genuinely clean options in the region when nearby spots are blown out by N winds. Head-high to a few feet overhead is the sweet spot, and incoming tide tends to square up the faces nicely. Intermediate to advanced surfers will get the most out of it, though the lineup stays surprisingly mellow outside summer. Bottom: Sand. Season: September through March. Consistency: moderate. Winter sessions demand a full 5/4 or 6/5 suit with hood, gloves, and booties because water temps drop to near-freezing, so factor in extended gear prep time if you're driving up for a dawn patrol session in January.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Summer draws moderate to heavy crowds, partly because parking access is easier for residents. Fall through spring the lineup thins out considerably, and the local vibe is generally welcoming year-round. Cold water does its own crowd-filtering from December onward, so winter sessions can feel surprisingly uncrowded for a beach this close to a town center.

Access & Facilities

Non-residents pay $25 per vehicle at parking kiosks along Beach Avenue, and summer access is tightly managed with resident-only permits. September through May is far easier. Kennebunk town center is minutes away for post-surf food and coffee, which matters a lot when you're defrosting after a February session.

Nearby Alternatives

If Gooch's is flat or onshore, York beaches to the south pick up more swell on smaller swells and can offer more size when the window is marginal. Wells Beach to the north is another sand-bottom option worth checking on the same NE swell pulse.
