Cape St. Francis earned its place in surf mythology as Bruce's Beauties in Bruce Brown's 1966 film *The Endless Summer*, a right-hand point break on South Africa's Eastern Cape roughly 100km west of Port Elizabeth. It works best on E to SW swell at 3-8ft with a WNW offshore wind, and the nearby Seal Point sub-break can produce walls stretching close to 150m when conditions align. The window runs May through October, peaking in the southern hemisphere winter when consistent south-Atlantic low-pressure systems generate long-period groundswell. Intermediate and advanced surfers will find the most reward here, the point rewards rail surfing and precise positioning over power hacks. Bottom: reef over point. Season: May to October. Consistency: moderate, swell dependent. Prioritise dawn sessions when the WNW offshore is cleanest and before any sea breeze fills in from the south.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Cape St. Francis draws surfers aware of its film history, but it is far less crowded than nearby Jeffreys Bay. The lineup is generally relaxed, though peak winter weekends bring more pressure. Standard respect protocols apply: wait your turn, read the rotation, and don't paddle around the field.

Access & Facilities

The town of Cape St. Francis has accommodation, cafes, and basic supplies. The point is accessible via the main beachfront road. Watch for submerged reef on the inside and strong rip currents during larger swells. No formal surf school infrastructure here, so come self-sufficient.

Nearby Alternatives

If Cape St. Francis is blown out or flat, Jeffreys Bay is roughly 20km northeast and offers multiple breaks across skill levels including the Supertubes. Seal Point, adjacent to the main break, can be worth checking when the primary peak is too crowded or the swell angle favours a slightly different entry.
