A bowling, barreling left-hand reef on the Ujung Genteng peninsula, Turtles draws comparisons to Bingin in Bali but handles a bit more swell and slightly larger surf. SW swell is the engine here, with E winds keeping conditions clean, making dawn and dusk sessions the priority when predominant side-on flow degrades the face mid-morning. Best from head-high to double overhead, the wave ledges on takeoff before spinning into a short bowling wall, with barrels becoming more frequent as swell builds. Medium to high tide is preferred by forecast services, though community notes favour low tide for the walk-in shortcut along the cliff over the stones to the point. Intermediate to advanced surfers will find it rewarding, the lineup stays mellow and localism is minimal. Bottom: reef. Season: March to October. Consistency: moderate, regional classic. Bail before the final closeout to avoid rusting pipes and shallow reef at the beach end.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Both weekday and weekend crowds are typically light to empty. Localism is welcoming and low-pressure. The moderate access and relative remoteness of Ujung Genteng keep the lineup uncrowded. Respect the local crew and give priority in the takeoff zone, especially when swell is up and the ledge gets serious.

Access & Facilities

Access is moderate. On higher tides it is roughly 600m paddle from the beach. At low tide, walk the cliff over the stones to the point for a much shorter paddle out. Mama's Losmen is the well-known nearby accommodation reference and is a short walk from the break. Critical hazard: old jetty pillars and rusting pipes along the beach are sharp and dangerous. Paddle toward the steps when exiting. Never turn your back on the ocean at this spot.

Nearby Alternatives

Ujung Genteng has additional reef and point setups along the peninsula worth checking when Turtles is not cooperating with swell or wind. The broader West Java coast offers several beach-break options for smaller or less organised conditions.
