A punchy right-hand reef on the West Java coast, Cimaja delivers hollow bowls and occasional low-tide barrels over a submerged lava shelf near the village of Cisolok, roughly 15 minutes from Pelabuhan Ratu. Optimal conditions are W, SW, or SSW swell in the 4-8ft range with N or NW winds keeping the face clean. Mid-to-high tide produces the most workable sections, though the low-tide barrels are the real draw when the swell lines up properly. This is primarily a shortboarder's wave, suited to intermediates and up, but the lineup draws a broad mix from Jakarta, making it regularly crowded on weekends and school holidays. Bottom: lava reef. Season: March through November. Consistency: medium, with the peak swell window delivering the most reliable surf. Water quality degrades after rain due to river runoff from the adjacent estuary, so time sessions accordingly and check conditions after heavy rainfall upstream.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Cimaja is the most visited break in the Pelabuhan Ratu area, drawing intermediates and experienced shortboarders from Jakarta, only 160km away. Weekends pack the lineup. Locals are generally welcoming but set snaking is common once the Jakarta crew arrives mid-morning. Dawn patrol before 7:30am is reliably quieter. Respect the pecking order and do not burn sets on your first session.

Access & Facilities

Street parking is free with a short walk to the water. Basic losmens and a couple of small hotels sit close to the break. No formal surf facilities on site, but Pelabuhan Ratu town has food, fuel, and supplies. Reef cuts are the primary hazard. Avoid surfing after heavy rain when estuary runoff turns the water visibly polluted.

Nearby Alternatives

When Cimaja is blown out or too crowded, Indicators offers a bigger, more serious outside pointbreak for experienced surfers with guns. Karang Haji is a mellow longboard-friendly right in smaller swells. Loji, a short drive south, is a long shapely left point worth the detour when SW swell is running.
