Raw big-wave reef on the Ujung Genteng peninsula, West Java, Ombak Tujuh punches well above its weight among Indonesian surf. A coral ledge jutting into deep water forces swells to jack without warning, producing elevator-drop take-offs and heavy, barreling walls more in the vein of Margaret River than the machine-perfect reefs further east. SW to W swell is the primary engine, with S swell also firing it up. NE to SE winds blow clean and offshore. Mid to high tide smooths the entry and gives the wave its best shape. Experts and big-wave specialists only: hold-downs here are cold, dark, and serious, and the reef underneath is live coral with no mercy. Bottom: reef. Season: May through September peak, with the broader window running March to November. Consistency: medium. Get there by boat or endure a long, winding road overland, neither option being casual.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The vibe in the water is welcoming and the lineup is rarely under pressure. The difficulty of access and the sheer size required to get the wave firing keeps crowds naturally thin. On legitimate big days, only a handful of experienced riders show up. Respect the seriousness of the wave and the people charging it.

Access & Facilities

Boat access is the cleanest option. The overland route is long and indirect. No parking, no facilities at the break itself. The wider Ujung Genteng area has cheap losmen accommodation with food nearby. Bring everything you need for the session: water, first aid, and a clear exit plan if things go wrong.

Nearby Alternatives

When Ombak Tujuh is too big or unsurfable, the Ujung Genteng peninsula has beachbreaks and smaller reef options within reach. Loji, a short drive south of Pelabuhan Ratu, offers a long shapely pointbreak left that handles a range of swell sizes and suits a wider skill range.
