A ruler-edged right-hand drainer that only fires when a rare convergence of WSW swell and NE offshores aligns on Raijua's backside reef, Savu Right sits in one of the most remote surf zones in Indonesia. Optimal conditions require swell with maximum W component to wrap around Raijua, ideally SW to WSW at 4-12ft, combined with NE winds that contradict the dominant SE trades. At low tide on an overhead swell, the convex reef produces some of the most hollow barrels in eastern Indonesia, bending back on itself as it drains along 200-500m of reef. High tide opens it to competent surfers, but coral heads on the insiders demand sharp awareness. The SE trades blowing devil wind into the barrel is the default condition here, which means most trips end in a skunking. Bottom: submerged reef. Season: SW swell season, May to October. Consistency: low, a handful of perfect days per year. Bring a step-up and patience, this wave rewards those who wait rather than those who rush the lineup.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Rarely more than two boats in the water. The remoteness and fickle conditions function as a natural crowd filter. The neighbouring left acts as a pressure valve when this one isn't on form. Respect is straightforward here: if you've made the effort to get this far, the surfers alongside you have too.

Access & Facilities

No parking, no facilities. Access is by boat from live-aboard or charter operating in the Savu Sea area. This is expedition surfing. Carry all your own water, food, and medical supplies. Coral reef: reef booties advisable, especially at low tide when the insiders get shallow and live coral heads are active.

Nearby Alternatives

When Savu Right is bumped out by the trades, the nearby left provides immediate relief and is more forgiving in trade wind conditions. Further east, Rote's Nemberala reef and the T-Land left offer more consistent swell windows and established charter infrastructure when the Raijua experiment doesn't pan out.
