A punchy right-hand reef break on Rote Island, Timor, Boa runs 100-150m on average days and stretches past 250m when a solid SW-WSW swell pushes in. Optimal conditions are a SW-WSW swell from 3-8ft, a north offshore wind, and a low-to-mid incoming tide. Trade winds roll through by around 9am most days during the dry season, so dawn sessions are non-negotiable. Comparable to nearby T-Land but typically a notch smaller, it suits experienced surfers who can read a reef that shifts character quickly with tide and swell angle. Bottom: coral reef. Season: dry season (May-October), best early morning. Consistency: reliable when swell aligns, but the wave can be disorganized and close out if conditions aren't dialled. Arrive at first light, paddle out from the beach, and leave before the trades kick in.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekday or weekend, the lineup stays uncrowded, which is one of Boa's quiet strengths. Localism pressure is minimal, but the wave rewards surfers who understand the tide window. Sessions run short by default once the trades arrive, so the lineup naturally self-regulates.

Access & Facilities

Paddle out directly from the beach. Rote Island infrastructure is basic: carry water and sun protection for long sessions. Tidal range here is significant and changes both the surf and nearshore currents more than beginners expect. Three children drowned at this beach when a shore current swept one in and two others attempted a rescue. Weak swimmers should stay out entirely.

Nearby Alternatives

T-Land (Nemberala) is the region's marquee right-hand point and typically runs larger and more consistently than Boa. When Boa goes fat at high tide or the swell drops, T-Land's longer wall often still has shape. Other reef setups along the Rote coast can fire in similar SW swell windows.
