A steep, fast reef break on Sumba's south coast, Racetrack earns its name from close-out sections and punishing walls that demand expert timing and commitment. It works best on S to W swell, mid tide only, with NE offshore winds keeping the face clean. Trade winds regularly cross the lineup and can sabotage conditions even when the swell is right. At 2-6ft it offers barrel sections and rapid walls, but the long reef produces frequent close-outs that punish hesitation. Consistent enough to check regularly but rarely firing in perfect shape. Bottom: submerged reef. Season: southern hemisphere swell season. Consistency: medium. Paddle out only if you're comfortable with steep drops onto exposed reef and committing to fast, unforgiving sections.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Racetrack sees almost no traffic. The wave is almost exclusively surfed by guests of the nearby surf resort, keeping crowds minimal. That said, a small pool of skilled surfers staying at the lodge means the lineup isn't guaranteed empty. Respect resort guests' sessions, particularly if you've traveled a long way to share the break.

Access & Facilities

No parking and no facilities on site. Access is effectively through the surf resort at Kallala. There is no channel rip to assist the paddle-out, so time entry and exit carefully given the exposed reef. Bring everything you need: water, wax, first aid. The nearest services are a significant drive away.

Nearby Alternatives

When Racetrack closes out or the trade winds make it unrideable, Five-O offers more defined lips on a nearby reef bend. Miller's Rights at Tarimbang is Sumba's most ridden wave and roughly 3 hours from Waingapu, a solid fallback when the south coast isn't cooperating. Mangkudu Island is worth checking for its exceptional swell consistency if you have the access.
