One of Indonesia's most debated waves, Nihiwatu on Sumba's southwest coast is a fast, hollow left-hand reef break that is legally restricted to guests of Nihi Sumba resort, with a cap of eight surfers in the water at any time. S to W swells from 4ft upward get it moving, though it genuinely delivers from 6ft and holds well past 8ft. NE offshore winds are essential. Low tide produces the fastest, most hollow sections, though it handles all tides. That eight-person cap is not a guideline but an enforced rule: armed resort security patrols by fast boat and will intercept passing charters. Bottom: submerged reef. Season: April through October. Consistency: high when swells run. Book well ahead and budget accordingly, access is through the resort only, and day-rate surf passes exist but carry a premium that rivals some flight tickets. Fat right-handers sit across the bay, and sunset-style rights and lefts on the next point are reachable by boat or car in roughly an hour for days when the main left is not cooperating.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The eight-surfer-maximum is enforced by resort management, making this one of the least crowded quality waves in Indo on paper. In practice, the "crowd" is whoever paid. Armed boat patrols are real. Do not paddle out on a charter unless you have resort authorization. Respect the system whether or not you agree with it.

Access & Facilities

Access is exclusively through Nihi Sumba Resort. Fly into Tambolaka Airport on Sumba's west coast. No public parking or beach access to the main break. The resort has all facilities. Water quality: no concerns. Hazards: shallow reef at low tide, strong rips on bigger swells.

Nearby Alternatives

When the left is flat or booked out, Pantai Marosi has two lefts sensitive to wind about an hour away. Miller's Rights at Tarimbang, roughly three hours from Waingapu, are Sumba's most publicly accessible quality wave and worth the drive on a solid S swell.
