A long left-hand reef break wrapping through a horseshoe bay on Sumba's remote west coast, Pero Lefts delivers one of East Nusa Tenggara's more under-the-radar advanced setups. The wave needs a solid SW to W swell, offshore SE trade winds, and is most sensitive to tide: mid-incoming is the window before the reef starts to shallow dangerously on the drop. Size range is best 4-8ft, though the wave can hold bigger when the swell is clean and the channel gives you a clean paddle-out. This is strictly advanced terrain. The reef is sharp, shallow, and unforgiving at lower tides, and big-swell days bring strong sweep currents that will flush you down the bay if you lose position. Bottom: reef. Season: April through October, peaking in the dry-season trade-wind months. Consistency: moderate. Bring a step-up and a solid understanding of reef exits before paddling out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Sumba's isolation keeps crowds manageable. Pero draws a small core of traveling surfers who know the island, but on most days you'll share the lineup with few others. Respect the local community at Pero village. Keep a low profile, be generous in the water, and you'll be welcomed.

Access & Facilities

Pero village is on Sumba's southwest coast, reachable by road from Tambolaka airport. Facilities are basic: small warungs near the village, limited accommodation options in the area. Bring your own supplies for a full day. Water quality is generally good but check locally after rain. Urchins and shallow coral are the main physical hazards on entry and exit.

Nearby Alternatives

When Pero isn't lining up, the broader Sumba west coast has scattered reef and beach options that come alive on similar SW swells. Waitabula-area breaks provide a fallback when Pero's tide window has closed or the swell is too raw.
