A hollow, powerful right-hander off a submerged reef on Sumba's west coast, Pero Rights demands overhead-plus swell before it even thinks about breaking properly. It needs a northerly wind to clean up, which limits it to the wet season, a narrow window that also brings unpredictable conditions to this remote corner of East Nusa Tenggara. The wave itself is short and unforgiving, ending in a sketchy cliff section that has no forgiveness built in. Inconsistency is the honest reality here: trade winds create chop, currents sweep through, and the swell needs to be well overhead before it offers anything worth paddling out for. Expert surfers only. Bottom: submerged reef. Season: wet season, roughly Dec-Mar for N winds. Consistency: low. The journey here is genuinely long, involving buses from Waingapu and rough roads to the town of Pero, so calibrate expectations before committing to a dedicated trip for this one wave.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Crowds are minimal bordering on nonexistent. The logistics alone filter out most surfers. On a working day you may share the lineup with a handful of others at most. Locals in Pero town are welcoming. Respect the community and the homestay infrastructure that makes the place work.

Access & Facilities

Bus from Waingapu to Waitabula, then onward to Pero by local transport. Budget two days for the journey from Waingapu. Pero town has one homestay offering meals. No parking infrastructure, no surf facilities. Bring all supplies you need beyond basics.

Nearby Alternatives

Pero Lefts on the opposite side of the rivermouth can be excellent when S-SE swell refracts into big bowl sections with barrel time, and it suits the dry season E-SE winds better. Wainukaka's rivermouth, a few hours away, offers a more varied ride with fast, hollow, and fat sections in the same swell window.
