A reliable beach break on the Outer Banks, Third Street sits between the Kill Devil Hills pressure zones of Avalon Pier and First Street, exposed to catch NE swells, tropical swells, and everything the Atlantic throws at it. SE and NE swell windows keep it active from late summer through winter, when tropical cyclones and nor'easters deliver the best energy. SW wind is ideal. It works on all tides, though expect a trough at low and heavy backwash at high thanks to the steep beach slope from the old Sea Ranch hotel structure. All skill levels can find something here, and the crowd stays moderate partly because parking is genuinely scarce. Bottom is sand, with triangle wrecks sitting to the south between First and Second Street. Season runs storm-dependent: late summer for tropicals, late fall and winter for frontal swell. Consistency is sandbar-dependent, and when it fires, it doesn't stay good long. Arrive early and size up the bar before paddling out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The vibe is welcoming and the crowd stays moderate, spread out by limited nearby parking. Expect it to draw more attention when the sandbar is good, especially from surfers walking up from First Street. First Street can get more territorial when it's pumping, so Third offers a more relaxed alternative during those runs.

Access & Facilities

Park at the Second Street access and walk down. Street parking will get you ticketed or towed. No dedicated facilities at Third itself. Water quality is among the cleaner spots in the area, though not without occasional issues after heavy rain.

Nearby Alternatives

If Third Street is blown out or the bar has gone flat, Avalon Pier to the north can offer structure-influenced peaks on the same swell. First Street to the south is worth checking on bigger NE swells but expect a more competitive lineup when it's on.
