Two Outer Banks beach towns sitting back-to-back on Hatteras Island, Waves and Salvo deliver classic sandbars that can fire up sheet-glass and thin-lipped when the stars align. S, SE, and NE swells all work here, with west winds ideal for Waves and NW winds acceptable at Salvo. Best size runs head-high to overhead-plus, and all tides are viable depending on where sand has stacked. The lineup is welcoming and accessible to all levels, though some peaks in Waves can crowd when the sand is stacking correctly. Bottom: sand and shipwrecks. Season: storm-dependent, tropical cyclones late summer and fall, nor'easters late fall through winter. Consistency: variable. The shipwreck at Salvo's south end has produced waves, but check your tetanus is current before paddling near it.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Waves draws more traffic when the sand cooperates, with the KOA-adjacent peaks occasionally drawing a cluster. Salvo stays quieter. Locals here are welcoming, but avoid blocking neighborhood streets with your car during summer months. Multiple working peaks spread the crowd when conditions are right.

Access & Facilities

For Waves, street parking is generally available but pull completely off the road. Salvo access is trickier with limited public entry, though a point of access exists south of town. South of Salvo, 4WD is needed and a permit is required for beach driving. Check for seasonal turtle and bird closures before heading out. Water quality is clean except immediately after storms.

Nearby Alternatives

Rodanthe Pier to the north is a reliable reference point and catches similar swell windows. When Waves and Salvo are blown out or sandbar-less, Hatteras Village to the south catches more exposed NE swell and can hold size when the northern stretches are messy.
